For over 30 years, ABC has worked with families, educators, and policy makers to support educational excellence. We advocate for the needs and rights of children and support both the children and their families through social and educational opportunities. All of this is done now, as it always has been, with a team of volunteers and community donors who share the belief that all children deserve to realize their potential as fully as possible.
ABC London is looking for community partners to help us bring projects to life that will enrich the lives of bright and gifted children in the city. As ABC is a not-for-profit registered Canadian charity, a tax receipt will be issued for all donations to the chapter. We would be happy to accept donations or sponsorship for the following programs currently underway:
First Lego League Junior Team - World Expo 2016 This fall, ABC's first First Lego League Junior team, The Brainstormers, participated in the 2015-16 challenge and presented their research and project at the First Lego League expo at Western University. This team of 7-9 year olds created a model of their community, including the Miller Recycling Facility, complete with numerous simple machines and a motorized conveyor belt whose speed was adjusted through the use of a computer program.
We are THRILLED that this team was selected in January to participate in the First Lego League World Expo in St. Louis, MO and has the opportunity to represent London Ontario. This is a tremendous honour for The Brainstormers as they are only 1 of 40 teams in the world to participate.
The coach of this team and other parent volunteers will take the team to St. Louis in April. You can sponsor this team's trip to the World Expo by assisting with the registration fee ($300 USD), providing team t-shirts with their team name and logo, or by making a donation of your choice to help defray the cost to the team.
First Lego League Junior Teams - materials Beth Mai, our Events Coordinator, volunteered this fall and again this winter to bring the First Lego League Junior program to London. This winter, she is leading 20 bright and curious children through the 2015-16 challenge. Each of the teams is working with the base kits recommended by FLL. The next step in the learning process is to invest in the Simple Machines + programming kits. These kits will be able to be used repeatedly at the Take-Off series we are planning and every time that the First Lego League Junior teams participate in a yearly challenge (Beth plans to volunteer her time to offer two of these sessions each year). To learn more about First Lego League Junior or to find out how you can support ABC in acquiring more materials, please email Beth Mai at firstname.lastname@example.org.
First Lego League (9-13 year olds) With the support of Western Engineering to mentor our chapter, we plan to offer a First Lego League team for children 9-13 this spring. The cost to a team in its first year is approximately $1500 and includes the Mindstorms EV3 robot, programming software, FLL kit materials, and the competition table that each team requires.
FLL provides instructions on how the table can be built, so a volunteer capable of building the table to precise measurements who could donate his or her time to this project would be most welcome. A local hardware store willing to sponsor the team by providing the materials would reduce the cost of starting this team by several hundred dollars. Space for Events We work to plan interesting and engaging events for children and their families. We are seeking community partners who would be willing to donate their space for 2-3 hours so that we can host an event for members. In turn, ABC is interested in partnering with community organizations to provide volunteer services, wherever possible, using resources at our disposal.
Sponsor a Local Event We plan social events and family enrichment sessions during the year and the events are run entirely by volunteers. The only costs are for materials and space. Sponsoring an event can reduce or eliminate the cost for participants. View our list of upcoming events to determine if you would like to sponsor one, or contact us with your own idea!
Sponsor a Family We are an inclusive group and will ensure that no child or family is excluded from an opportunity for financial reasons. You can make a difference by donating to support families in these circumstances. A donation of $25 typically allows a family to participate in a day's events.
Make a Donation of Any Amount Every single donation, no matter how big or small, contributes to making a difference in the lives of children in our community. Because we are an all-volunteer organization, you know that 100% of your donation goes directly toward benefitting the children of our organization and their families.
